The HD590s are not the same as the HD580s: the 580s are pretty much the precursors to HD600s (same 300 ohm drivers and housings). I got the HD580s in college...they were my first "audiophile" headphones. The paint in the headband started chipping, so I stripped it...have since replaced ear cushions and tried replacing the plastic ear cups with HD650 ones. In hindsight, there might have been some difference with the ear cups being plastic instead of recent series being perforated metal...so I think the overall performance of HD580 vs HD600 is very close. At the time I first got the HD580, I had it plugged directly into Sony Discmans (and just raised the volume higher). They were really an awakening as to how a good headphone could have soundstage and not sound "closed-in" like the Sony headphones I had heard.
I think the HD590s were the first start to having another series that was easier to drive. I later got some HD595s to be able to play on any portable without amp. They were a different design than the HD580s: the drivers being angled towards the ear. When taking off the cushions, the drivers looked like the HD580/600/650, yet they have much lower impedance (also compared to HD590s). I know some say the HD650 is too dark compared to the HD600/580, but with my headphone setup and preference with large symphonies, I found them the most resolving before my recent foray into more headphones.
The 595s have a different response curve from the 590s. The ones I had were pretty good for classical music, very balanced with a good low end. They don't hold a candle to my Oppo PM-1s though.
