Hi, i use a fiio x5 (original) with fiio e12a and shure se535.

My question is - is there any dap or dap/amp that will be an appreciably better listening experience?

I like warm.smooth, enveloping sound that is emotional rather than analytic and listen to mainly older music that is not necessarily well recorded so need something forgiving of poor recordings (e.g. 1930's jazz/blues)

i only use lossless files.

any ideas based on personal experience would be helpful

If you want a more neutral and transparent sound then any iPhone would beat the crap out of those Fiios. But the iPhones won't be anywhere near as loud. You can add an O2 for volume.

An iPhone won't be warm. But it won't be dark and muddy like the Fiios either. It will be a balance of crisp and smooth unlike Fiio.
