I have two setups, the first is in my office so its pretty easy for me to say most of the time I am working whilst listening to this setup. The other one is there intended to be a dedicated listening area but at times I find I am wanting to otherwise occupy myself so I will be doom-scrolling addictive sites like Reddit and Head-Fi, playing endless match-three games on my phone or using the Switch I bought for my daughter to play games that don't require sound (actually really difficult to find good examples of these).

Curious to know what you all do whilst listening to your lovely gear :)

Guess this topic is of zero interest to anyone, or maybe people are too preoccupied with the 'Who is the best looking person?' thread instead

Edit: I actually think this is an interesting topic as it is reflective of the ways with the internet and streaming (or just listening to local files), that people "consume" music.

While listening I will often surf around on head-fi, reddit or Steve Hoffman music sites or maybe highresaudio to see what's new. I'd say probably 80% of the time I at least surf around a bit during listening sessions while on a streaming DAP or phone, but my best experience as a listener is the old quiet, darkened room totally undisturbed, no web stuff, with headphones.

You mean besides browsing Head-Fi?

I listen to music sitting comfortably with my eyes closed even if sometimes I fall asleep or occasionally surf the web…

Browse tube listings on eBay and then use ChatGPT to compare the listings.

Here’s a breakdown of the listings, focusing on their qualities and how each might contribute to your setup. I’ll highlight which ones stand out and are likely to bring value:

Recommended Listings for Adding Unique Flavor to Your Setup

1. 5R4GY GE JAN CG ‘Double D Getter’ NOS Valve Tube:
• Attributes: Double “D” getter, hanging filament, JAN military spec.
• Sound Character: Known for a full-bodied, warm sound with smooth highs. The double “D” getter design can contribute to a richer midrange and well-controlled bass.
• Worth Adding? Yes, as it offers a high-quality build with potential for lush mids and warmth, aligning well with your tonal preferences.

2. GE 5R4GY (Listing 2 - Coke Bottle Shape, Black Plates):
• Attributes: Coke bottle shape, black plates, dual bottom “[]” getters, dual support rods, hanging filament, brown base.
• Sound Character: Typically, coke bottle tubes with black plates bring a vintage, smooth tone with a relaxed top end and warm mids. The design enhances soundstage depth.
• Worth Adding? Yes, particularly if you want a slightly warmer, vintage sound that provides smooth highs and an open midrange.

3. Pair GE 5R4GYA (Brown Base, Side D Getter):
• Attributes: Brown base, black plates, dual support rods, side “D” getter, strong testing results.
• Sound Character: With the side “D” getter, these would likely produce a clear, full-bodied sound with a bit more midrange presence.
• Worth Adding? Possibly, if you need a pair and are looking for GE quality. However, the other two GE options (Listings 1 and 2) have more desirable sonic attributes for warmth and soundstage.

Other Listings with Notable Characteristics

4. GE 5R4GYB (Clear Glass, Black Plates, Side O Getter):
• Attributes: GT shape, black plates, side “O” getter, plastic base.
• Sound Character: A more neutral-sounding tube that might not add as much warmth as the coke bottle options. Likely has a tighter, clearer bass response.
• Worth Adding? Only if you prefer a more neutral sound; otherwise, the coke bottle GE listings offer more warmth and smoothness.

5. Full Sleeve (5) GE 5R4GA (Side O Getter):
• Attributes: GT shape, black plates, side “O” getter, matching date codes.
• Sound Character: Likely similar to the 5R4GYB, with a more balanced, neutral presentation.
• Worth Adding? Good value if you need multiple tubes for consistency, but not essential for adding unique tonal color.

6. GE 5V4G (Coke Bottle, Black Plates):
• Attributes: Coke bottle shape, bottom “[]” getter.
• Sound Character: A smooth and slightly warmer tone, similar to the GE 5R4GY coke bottle tubes but with slightly different characteristics in output power and voltage drop.
• Worth Adding? Could be a nice alternative if you want a coke bottle shape with vintage warmth, though not as robust as the 5R4 series.

Less Recommended for Your Setup

• Raytheon 5U4GB, RCA 5Y4G, Pair Rad-Tel 5Y4G, RCA 5U4GB, Sylvania 5Y4GA: These tubes, while good quality, generally don’t offer the tonal depth or warmth of the GE 5R4GY series. They tend to be more neutral to slightly brighter, which might not add as much value if you’re seeking warmth and richness.

Summary

For unique tonal enhancement, the 5R4GY GE JAN CG ‘Double D Getter’ (Listing 1) and the GE 5R4GY with Coke Bottle Shape and Black Plates (Listing 2) are the top picks. They both offer a warm, smooth, and full-bodied sound that would likely enhance your setup’s midrange richness and depth. The Pair GE 5R4GYA could also be a good option if you need a dual set, though the sonic differences are slightly more subtle.

If you’re looking for a single, standout tube, the 5R4GY GE JAN CG Double D Getter (Listing 1) is likely the best choice for adding warmth and smoothness with a classic vintage tone.

This is an interesting question because it varies for me depending on the headphone I'm using. If I'm using something mediocre I'll read the news, go on facebook, and generally just keep my eyes busy. But if I'm listening to something really good like my HE1000 I can't focus on anything else. Too much audio detail for my brain. I tend to just stare blankly and bob my head because I'm so into the music. I wonder if this happens to other people?

• Look for threads that interest me enough to post in. Usually in forums that have, 'Off-topic Discussion' or, 'General Discussion' sub-forums.

• Grind tedious video game collectables / quests / trophies.

• Make song details with ChatGPT, then use Suno AI to create it.

I listen to music while doing 'everything'...on-the-go I bring my DAP and IEM's, at home whether I'm cooking, surfing, cleaning or doing some hobby I have some kind of tunes playing. Every room has access, and the ones that don't are connected to the ones that do...so needless to say, music is an integral part of my life.
