I have two Schiit Modi 3's. One on my computer feeding a pair of powered Kanto YU4 speakers. I'm very happy with the sound of it. It's the best sound I've ever had on my computer! The other Modi 3 is on my TV feeding into my HiFi. I previously had a $20 DAC on my TV and there were times when I had trouble understanding fast spoken words. With the Modi 3, that almost never happens. Also, music sounds much better now from the TV. The current price for a Schiit Modi 3 DAC is listed as $129.00 on the Schiit website. The Multibit model will not be available again until December.

If you're in China as in the Mainland there are other options over there. Like Topping DACs.

I'm not sure what the translator did here. "Burr" is for something else entirely, ie the metal shavings that accumulate on the edge of a knife that's being sharpened for example. If you mean a "Burr Brown" DAC, I wouldn't get too caught up with the brand of the DAC chip as a reason to buy it, however I do try to stay away from DACs that used Cirrus Logic before because whoever designed the circuits tended to allow for sharp treble on these. That said, that's not a problem on my Hidizs AP80 player, which I got for all other reasons and ignored the DAC chip brand. Got lucky that it doesn't sound like a whole bunch of Cirrus Logic CDPs and some DACs that I got to listen to long ago.

I have a Modi 3+ that I seldom use because I've been a longtime Modi multibit fan but I did order Modi 3E today. I've only owned one DAC with an ESS chip and that was the Topping D50s which I didn't care for. The Modi multibit just has great synergy in my headphone system ( Audiolab 6000CDT transport and Asgard 3 amp ) but I'm looking forward to trying out the Modi 3E.

I have one and would recommend it. I'm considering getting a Multibit but with production delays, I'll be satisfied with the Modi 3+ for the time being.

That problem has more to do with the headphones; it just gets attributed to the DAC (and the amp) because if a headphone does have that in its response, the amp and/or DAC can make it much worse. Alternately, it gets attributed to the DAC and HPamp because most headphones actually do have this problem to begin with, but conversely, that also means that even if you get a relatively smooth-sounding DAC, it might not work.

If you want to be absolutely certain that it won't have this problem, try looking for a multi-chip non-oversampling DAC using Philips TDA154x or Analogue Devices ADxxxx chips. These tend to have the board designers really go for a result that will smooth out the response. Had a DAC-AH (upgraded with Mundorf caps) with a Little Dot MkII (with Mullard tubes) before, and...that combo was already excessive for my HD600. I found the DAC-AH with a decently smooth solid state amp to be sufficient. Unfortunately my DAC-AH only used SPDIF and I needed USB, so I eventually sold it. Have not found that sound in any other DAC, although Meier DACs come close.

Even without the Mundorf caps though the DAC-AH if you can find it, even the USB version (note: I'm not sure it works with anything other than Windows), is at least double the price of the Modi3. The other DACs I'm kind of sure are what you're looking for are Meier DACs and these cost way more.
