what about portable speakers?

I'm looking for the best speakers that are portable enough to fit in a backpack. Battery power not required, but that could be useful. Will be used in combination with various MP3 players at work, fairly low volume. I've seen all kinds of players compared but nothing about little speakers. maybe the sound quality doesn't really matter so much considering the environment BUT i still need the ones with the most _potential_ to sound good. you know what I mean.

any input appreciated

This is more than you are looking for, but I've been running one as a cabin set-up for a couple of years and it is wonderful. Much closer to the sound quality you are getting from a good set of cans.

Maybe check out the cute little Gallos. I haven't heard them, but I was massively impressed by the full sized models that preceeded them.

I really don't like the Gallo's. I would put them in the same sound catagory as Bose. Especially compared to the other speakers they used to make. Check out the Monsoon MM-700. I use the for my rears in my Maggie system. Tons of reviews:

If you're looking at Edirols, you still might want to listen to Aego speakers. The Crazy Cuban has them for $349 if you e-mail asking about his special.

I heard Aegos again in a store the other day and was fairly impressed (though I much prefer passive speakers and will probably pick up B&W, which are not portable but sound far better than anything we've mentioned).
