So I know it's possible, I just wonder how. Some people talked about optical in addition to the usb cable, while others didn't mention any opticals at all. So, do I need more than just the usb cable, or is that enough?

USB bypasses sound card features, S/PDIF (optical & coaxial) works with sound card features.

If you use USB connection you will get just pure stereo sound.
In order to take advantage of the surround sound processor on your soundcard you'd have to use S/PDIF.
