Hi Forum,

I have used the DT 770 PRO (250 Ohm) for like the past 7 years and am still very happy with it. I use it to game, listen to music (bass heavy stuff, mostly hip hop) and sometimes to watch a movie. I also have an open back Sennheiser Game One (open back) used as Headset and also for gaming and I like them both.

Am driving the headphones with a SoundBlaster AE-7.

Now, I was thinking about upgrading the DT770 PRO eventually. It should be a closed back one again. Budget is around 300 to 600 Euro. Good sound stage would be a plus for gaming.

Would the DT1770 PRO (250 Ohm) make sense? I also looked into some of the Denons (ah-d5200,ah-d7200) and also the Meze 99 Classics, which could be alternatives. I watched a review of the DT1770 mentioning that the bass is not very defined as the reviewer put it and even less defined than the DT770.

The DT 770 PRO is really, really good, at least for my purposes, so it seems to be difficult to find something better without breaking the bank.

Can anyone recommend an upgrade that would make sense?

I find the bass on the 1770 to be bloated, same as the 99 but the Meze feels more fun. Sounds to me like you want some bass but with texture and detail. Denon D5200 is what I would go for in your case.

I had the DT770 Pro X and the tuning was far worse than the 250 ohm version with one ply of toilet paper cut to a circle on the driver under the foam to handle the treble peak. A real upgrade to that would be the Dan Clark Aeon closed back with a foam filter insert which I have now. It's a comfort king and out of the box tuned great with foam inserts.
The DT1770 was a little too smooth in the bass and mids.

Thank you for your advice! :)

Would you still go for the AH-D5200 if I could have a AH-D7200 for only 34 euro more? Currently the AH-D5200 goes for 399 and I could have an AH-D7200 for 433.

I did read some EQ tweaking may be required to get the 7200 to sound like I want it, maybe even more like some modding, which I would probably not want to do for now, due to lack of expirience. On the other hand build quality is slightly better if I understand it correctly.

For me, the 7200 is warm and dark, becomes a bass monster with EQ. The 5200 is much more neutral, though it also takes a bass shelf. Neutral for the 5200 doesn't mean boring, it's still an enjoyable headphone.

But in the context of what would be an upgrade to the 770, the 5200 is closer. Build differences between the 5200 and 7200 aren't really worth noting. The 5200 is slightly more comfortable for me, but I pad the headbands.

Please do, if they're brand new, the drivers do change over some time.

Am trying them right now for like an hour. Bass hits perfect. And so much more details. Just like it felt when I bought my first good headphone the DT770's. They are also more comfortable on my head and I like the build quality. Definitely worth the upgrade! Thanks again.:gs1000smile:

You're welcome, enjoy them. They will smooth out a little with some play time. And they also take EQ well, just don't push them to distort/clip.
