Yea it does sound a little weird, it also lowers volume so you can't hear things you normally would.

Does anyone have any idea what settings to put the Maximum Hardware Notes and Maximum Software Notes on? They under the SYNTH tab, under voices. I just put them to the max value thinking more is better

Max 'em out (unless you have a very slow processor) and choose dynamic allocation for best midi quality.
