I'd get a VPI classic in a heartbeat in that price range. Leaves you excellent money for a very good phono stage, cartridge and associated cabling.

You can also get a used VPI Aries or TNT for starters. It has very good value (resale, if you don't like it), and is very flexible (upgrades, if you do like it and want to improve on it). From the platter, to the motor, even the spike feet. For cartridge, Dynavectors are a good match with the table and in my experience with your type of music as well.

I love my vinyl rig (see sig) but it is not by any stretch of the imagination warm or lush sounding. The music is hewn from onyx, so solid and sure is the musical presentation but it isn't ideal for those seeking a more mellifluous rendition.
