whats the difference? My amp can be wired for 30w in ultralinear mode or 15w in triode mode... assuming my speakers are efficient enough, what would the benefits be of using triode mode?

I don't know the technicalities of it, something to do with using one or both sections of a tube.
But sound-wise, the UL mode will basically give you a more dynamic sound where as the Triode mode will give you a beautiful mid-range (TRYING to sound like SET mid-range).

When using beam tetrodes (4 elements) or pentodes (5 elements), you can wire it to use only three internal elements, forcing the tube to perform as a triode. The trade off: you increase distortion and sacrifice a good deal of power when wired in triode.

In my experience, in EVERY amp with user-switchable triode/ultralinear circuits, triode sounds better.
