Hi, I have been looking to complement my modded Little Dot i+ amp with a decent DAC. My current setup is hooked up through a marantz reciver's phones out, which sounds harsh and full of noise. The receiver is hooked up to my computer via a digital coaxial cable.

My budget is around $100-$130 and everything I have looked at, it seems like Shiit Modi is a fav. one. With version 2 now available ($110 shipped directly from their site), I am ready the pull the trigger. However, I just came across Topping D20 DAC which is a bit more versatile in-terms of number and types of inputs (optical, coaxial, USB) which is what I am looking for should I need to upgrade my audio rig. I also like that fact that I can roll opamp on it to enhance the sound further. I can find one as cheap as $120 online.

So what do you recommend? Topping D20 (versatile) or Modi V2 (simple and straight forward)? Any other options out there (I have seen some but they are either more expensive or the reviews are mixed)?

Thanks!

Well I can't attest to the Modi V2 (though from others' impressions is a solid choice), but I own the D20 and think it's a great DAC for the money. I don't have too much experience though. I'm really only able to compare it to the Firestone Audio FUBAR IV Plus and the NuForce uDAC 2.

I did end up getting D20. However, when I compared it with my built-in amp of my Marantaz reciever, the sound seemed overly bright (and hence a bit harsh). I ended up returning it and got Yulong D100 DAC-amp combo. Now that is thing is a different beast altogether.

I am sure someone using D20 would like it a lot.

Just like headphones, it all depends on preference. I've got it paired with a Topping TP30mkII and I'm quite happy with it. It's more clear and balanced than my old FUBAR IV Plus, but not bright to my ears. Considering the cost of a Yulong D100 though, I'd sure hope it's a different beast altogether! It's 4x the cost of my Topping stack (I got my D20 used and my TP30 new on eBay so the total with like $100)!
