I got some speakers from A&B Sound on a boxing day sale in 1995 or 1996 for $115. They are 50watts and nice. The problem is for years now, the bass nob went inside the right speaker etc. We've looked at replacements before, like when my mom moved back to Vancouver from Saltspring. But the 2.1 speakers we saw at BestBuy she though were too load.

Here are my current speakers (anyone recognize them?).

She lives in a six pack of town houses second one in, which means the 12ft wide house has neighbours on both sides of my room. Not thick walls either (only one layer of bricks I assume for the firewall). The budget is $100 but that isn't remotely fixed.

What I want (not my mom even though it's her place)
  1. Clear rounded sound that does a decent job of all levels (bass, treble, etc)
  2. Optical in (if possible)
What my mom wants
  1. No sub woofer as she thinks it will be too loud and be heard by the neighbours (I always have my windows open due to my room being hot as well)
  2. not huge speakers that blast the house and neighbours
My MDD G4 is still there for another year so I also will require 1/8 converter for now, but when my Mac Pro moves in, I want Optical sound. I am using 128kbps AAC for now, but once I get a big enough iPhone I will finally go all Apple Lossless.
