Actually, haven't we gone around on this before? The remote controls a motor on the knob, and turns the knob. That's all there is to it. That's how the Creek works (though it's not a stepped attenuator, I don't see why you can't replace it, as long as the motor is strong enough to get past the "clicks"). I do believe there actually is a high-end pre that does this...

Maybe I've got the concept a little wrong here but AFAIK my Cyrus III amp has a stepped attenuator (it clicks as it goes around) and it also has a bank of LEDs around the outside of the dial that shows you where the 'knob' is pointing at...

When using the remote, the dial does not move but the LEDs and the subsequent volume increase DO...

Is this a passive attenuator? (in terms of using the remote)... would that mean that you would LOSE sound quality by using the remote?!
