It already has. Check out XPlay by MediaFour. Lets you connect a PC or Mac iPod to a Windows PC and do all file management (including playlists) in Windows Explorer.

I can name 4 softwares/jukeboxes that will work seamlessly w/the iPod; 2 of them have already been listed: Anapod and Xplay; two FREE iPod loaders are EphPod and MediaMonkey jukebox. I personally use the jukebox and have already disowned iTunes...

As for a DAP that kicks the iPod's ass, the only one that comes close is the iAudio X5 IMHO... the Karma is another, the only problem is that the Karma is notorious for its hard drive failures (outside of warranty, naturally). The X5 seems to be superior in every way to the iPod except for two critical areas: 1) mid-range SQ; 2)ID3 database tagging and m3u support (soon to be repaired, I understand) and 3)warranty service - Cowon america tries to give good support, but to date no DAP I have encountered has service quality anywhere close to Apple's. And before anybody starts accusing me of being an Apple person (so to speak), truth be told, I don't like Apple, and like Steve Jobs even less... I do give credit where credit is due, and the iPod deserves credit. It is a kick ass player.

How about a digital out as well. But then, I bought one regardless. Still, would be nice, since it'd allow the pod to be a portable and home source.

You can say that again. What is with Apple on that, anyway?

the VAST majority of ipod owners dont know enough to want it. the vast majority of ipod owners know they want an ipod because its an ipod, and not much more about them.

and a smaller majority of them, but a majority of the ipoding population would probably do something stupid like set em all wrong and wounder why everything sounds like crap. a system reset would reset the eq's to zero, and music would sound good again. this would of course spring on the i-have-one-too-pod's users top post that there is something rong (deliberate lacking of w to emphasize stupidity) with the i-have-one-too pod and demand recalls/class action lawsuits.

i wish my creative zen extra had a pre-amp line out. that would be hot.

What is your reasoning behind putting a 1/4" jack on a portable mp3 player?
