I'm a complete beginner to vinyl, and my father's old turntable is broken, but we are planning to fix it. But I've stumbled upon a deal to buy a technics sl-bd10 for $10, and I was wondering if it's any good.

The guy said that it's in excellent working condition, just needs a new needle. I would like to get another turntable just to put in my room.

It's very good for a tenner. Cost about 150 back in the 1980's and is pretty much the same as the SLBD80 you find new today for about the same amount.

Only slight drawback is that it's a P-Mount cart but there is still plenty of choice around from the likes of Shure and AT which would match a table like this nicely.

I guess, you've meant the SL-BD20. And I wouldn't consider T4P/P-Mount a drawback - on the contrary, for a beginner, I'd definitely consider it an advantage.

Crazy88: An SL-BD10 isn't bad for 10 bucks - however, this is about the lowest entry-level belt drive table Technics ever offered. In addition, there really is no lack of Technics tables on the used market: E.g., over here better Technics models like the SL-QD33 and SL-QX300 typically go for some 40 Euro on ebay. So, while an SL-BD10 for US$ 10 wouldn't be a bad buy, you could probably easily find a better Technics model below US$ 50. That said, if the SL-BD10 is in very good cosmetical condition, it might be worth its 10 bucks alone for the hood...

Sigh.... went to check it out. The motor had a problem, and it wouldn't change speed, so I didn't buy it. Maybe i'll just save money and go for a Rega P1 in a few months, or maybe a better Technics table. Thanks for the replies though, I learned quite a bit.

Sorry to bump an old thread, but I just picked up one of these today for $20. Works and sounds great! Hood is still attached, sounds clean. Has a Shure cartridge and needle in good working order.

That's the turntable I current use....the Technics SL-BD20. Excellent budget turntable. It's much better turntable than people give it credit for. I'm going to put on my 12" single of "Careless Whispers"

It is a good turntable.
It's unfortunate that 12" of good pvc was wasted that way. It could have been used for something better like drain pipe.

I dont know if I should start a new thread or add to this one.........My teenager has never had a turntable so her curiousity got the better of her and we borrow my Dad's. It is a SD-BD10 as well. When we plugged the jacks in it seems to only be playing in mono. I know the LP I have on was recorded in stereo but I cant figure out where the problem lies. Cartridge or connection? Any feedback would be awesome as I cant find any info at the Technics website. Thanks peeps!!

Some obvious and mildly patrionisng questions:

Do you mean mono or just one channel only ?
Are you sure the LP is stereo ? many LPs as late as the 70s were mono
Is it a mono cartridge ?
Was the cartridge wired up mono ?
Is there a mono/stereo switch on the amp ?

It is very difficult to diagnose your problem without more info.

It's a p-mount cart which is designed to be plug and play, so assuming when you say mono you mean only one channel is coming out then I'd try to gently remove the cart and plug it straight back in as it's probably just dirty contacts it's been stored in a dusty attic perhaps. You pull it fowards carefully while holding the headshell.
If this doesn't cure it then try swapping out the interconnect cables as there could be a break in there.
If neither of these things help you could be looking at a faulty cart or else worse case scenario a break in the internal wiring of the arm. The first one you can obvioulsy rectify by buying a replacement cart which is something you should do anyway if it's not been used in years. The second is a lot more problematic. You can try taking the deck apart to locate the break but if it's in the tube itself then it's proably better to jst but a new deck. These Technics belt drives are still available on Amazon if you hunt around.
