Looking to buy a stylish and good sounding CD minisystem that hopefully can play/record MDs too. Making great MD recordings is a concern of mine. Anyone know of such system?

If you can find a JVC FS-MD9000, grab it

They're discontinued, but exactly what you're looking for.

I'll second the recommendation for the JVC FS-MD9000. I picked up one on closeout a year or two ago for the bedroom, and it is a great little mini (micro?) system. Doesn't have all of the latest features like high speed dubbing or MDLP, but it is a good sounding, solid little unit.

It's been discontinued? Does it play CDs?

Is there a system that will play and record in MDLP mode?

The Sony MXDD40 does this. Is this the best player in terms of MD recording? Or is a separate CD source and separate MD recorder better for the job. I would need a 2ch amp or receiver and then speakers in order for it to work right?

I has been discontinued for at least two years now, but there may still be some new ones floating around. I got mine about a year or so after they were discontinued. And yes, it does play CD's.

You are probably going to be limited to Sony (and maybe Sharp) for a CD/MD minisystem that does MDLP and is in current production (unless you want to look for a Japanese model and have it shipped over.

My advice if you can afford it, is to get a combo deck (like the Sony MXD-D5C that I just picked up for $200), and then either a receiver or integrated amp and a good pair of speakers. You could get the MXD-D5C, a receiver (Sony, Onkyo, Denon for $150-250) and a pair of bookshelf speakers, like some Polks for under $500 and it would be a lot more versatile than most minisystems and most likely sound better too.

I used to own a JVC FS-MD9000. It was a great system for a college apartment dweller. If space and money are not overwhelming constraints, I would look into a cheap CD player, MD deck (or combo CD+MD), receiver/integrated amp, small bookshelf speakers. That'll give you much fuller, powerful sound.

If you really need a minisystem, some of the Sony minisystems are OK. Definitely audition them carefully though. I've heard some pretty horrible Sony minisystems. The JVC sounded better than any Sony's I had heard a couple of years ago.

I'm buying this for my gf so style and room is a concern. For some reason the FS-MD9000 is still listed on the JVC website.

How can I get a unit shipped from Japan? And how can I make it to work since there's voltage differences.
