SpyMac Limited Edition iPod Stand *REVIEW*
Feb 24, 2005 at 9:47 PM Post #16 of 26
Guys, you know what? Most of you are completely right! I wanted to do a review for the day before I went to bed and I was writing this at 3:30 in the morning and being totally honest I just wanted to get done with it and go to bed and I have to admit this review was not totally honest.

You guys are right, this is just a stand. It's a nice stand at that which I find attractive and will last forever however it's not worth any dollar amount near $50.

It is CNC machined which is a very expensive process as well as made from Aluminum which is expensive as well but for $50 it's just not worth the price. If the price were to be dropped by 50% to $24.99 I honestly believe it would be worth the price for this stand which shows off and complements the iPod. However the stand is not worth the current asking price of $49.99 in all honesty. The stand is aluminum although because I do happen to know a considerable amount about aluminum grades I know this stand is not made of high quality aluminum. The aluminum used is a much cheaper grade aluminum than a high quality grade such at 6061-T6.

I am therefore correcting my review with the above accurate grade (see first post) and from this and any point further ALL reviews I write will be entirely straightforward and unbiased. I apologize for this and hope you guys understand.

It's from Spymac's description of the stand. And why not, have an iMac G5 on my desk here, and safe for it being louder than my iBook (G3

but now with a brand new Hitachi drive - it's oh so quiet!

) it's quite super for a computer

I suppose you are thinking more in the direction of a cluster when facing the term supercomputer? Some very cheap but potent clusters are constructed of nothing but G5s as well... there's no denying, G5 systems have something super about them.

Something a little more clever than just letting lay there on the bottom.

Plus, on the bottom, are there rubber bumpers, or felt, something to prevent rubbing the bottom of the iPod's resting in it, taking it in and out over time?

You are right. This would have been a much better product if one, like you said the dock connector being integrated better, two if Spymac really did use a high quality grade aluminum (which would also weigh less) and three if the price was cut in half to $24.99.

The bottom of the stand features four soft half circle type rubber feet. Each stand comes with a black silicon type padding that fits between the stand and the iPod.

Yes, there actually could not be a better fit with the PocketDock and this stand. It fits perfectly connected to the iPod while on the stand with about 1/32 of an inch left of space on each side of the PocketDock.

6061-T6 aluminum (as you said, overkill for this) is under $2/pound. And you can buy stuff that's been intricately CNC'd for $5. They're reaming (machinist pun unintended) the trendy iPod market, as are many vendors.

I don't know that this product is any worse a ratio than a silicone iPod case for $20, but that's not my point.

(What's my point? I'll have one by the end of the post, I promise!)

This could be it: the usefulness of a review comes from the first-hand knowledge a reviewer provides, hopefully with their own photos, and definitely their own copy. Not from uninformed conjecture or plagiarism. This may sound harsh, but a lot of non-registered visitors come here, see these reviews, and they should get something substantial out of it.

Since you've pledged nothing but fair and unbiased reviews in the future, I'd spend some more time looking at the reviews which have been canonized here to get a better idea of what people are after.

Thanks for the efforts.

Spankypoo, you are absolutely correct! It does not sound harsh because it's right. Thank you for telling me this as this reminds me of the true purpose of reviewing and I am going to stick to that purpose! Sometimes when one does something they tend to loose sight of the original purpose and drive off the tracks. That was happening here with this review and with what you have just said you have moved me back on the tracks.

That would make it a super computer! Not a supercomputer.

Ah, but then it's not a "Power Mac G5," is it? Then it's a PPC970 cluster.

And it sure ain't gonna be running MacOS.
