Sports jackets as we all know are for more formal occasions like going out to a respectable restaurant down town after 8 o'clock. But in the old days, people wore sports jackets when they watched sports.

This is why we call them sports jackets. Of course, these days nobody wears a sports jacket when watching sports unless you're the TV announcer. Or maybe if you attend the horse races.

So yeah, just clearing up the facts.

Thank all of the professional sports licensing for making sport jackets more formal for sporting events...and maybe Zima for making sport jackets morer casual anywhere, too.

In my opinion, you can wear a sports jacket when attending the game and even wearing it at a sports bar is perfectly fine especially if it's down town like in a city like Boston for example. A neck tie is acceptable too. Grey slacks and brown leather shoes is the ideal choice if your sports jacket is traditional navy blue. If you are in your 20s or 30s and you're going bald, you will look more respectable.

People still wear jackets to sports events, but those are the people sipping champagne and eating prime rib in the VIP booth.

What is disappointing is that, despite air conditioning in, say, basketball stadiums, people don't really wear coats. But 2200 to 1800 years ago, people wore togas for sporting events.

Look at that guy, front row, edge of screen - he's got a toga on; and several ladies have their veils on. Which, ironically, is something that Europe is trying to ban these days, when it used to be formal wear everywhere. Even for dudes during certain rites.

That said, the toga isn't always the best formal wear. Sometimes a highly ornate lorica musculata is better, along with a gilded crown.
