My primary rig is a headphone set-up comprising of HD600 (stock cables), X-Cans v2 w/ X-PSU (stock 6DJ8 ECC88 soon to be replaced by Mullard gold pin E88CCs) , Silver Audio SB4 I/C, and NAD 502 CD player.

I think the NAD 502 is the weakest link. Not that it's bad. It's just that the rest of the system easily reveals the 8/9 yr old entry-level NAD's limitations particularly on more complex music (it hardens and becomes gritty).

The sound I'm looking for is one that is more lush, more liquid without compromising detail and (bass) tightness. I like what I heard on a Rega Planar 3 TT but don't want to go analog as my listening habits (listen to 3-4 tracks on a disc at random then change to next disc) doesn't sit well with vinyl.

I'm veering towards tube output CDPs like the Ah! Njoe Tjoeb 4000, Heart CD6000, Jolida, OEM of nOrh CD1, AMC but don't have the chance to audition these where I am (Manila, Philippines). Anyone here who have tried these on an HD600/X-Cans v2 set-up?

Likewise interesting though less so than a single box solution are DACs like the Audio Note DAC1.1x, Bel Canto DAC1, and Musical Fidelity A-324. I can use my NAD 502 as transport or my Pioneer DV525 (where I've read mixed results when paired up with a decent DAC).

The only other source I've heard on my cans rig is the Arcam CD72 w/c I found nice but rather too polite/civilized.

I'd like to stay below US$1k but I may be swayed towards something like tha Audio Note CD2.1x.

Thanks in advance!
