After switching from an itx pc system with/without jcat usb xe pcie + iFi X/Elite - to a much smaller footprint = Synology NAS DS118(elite psu, jcat usb enhancer)

I know believe it is true!

Im mostly interested in Pi. What are the alternatives?

I like the idea of CM4 modul and board(for jcat usb xe pcie)

I think Pi+HAT is as small footprint as u can get. If you can live with HAT's quality in term of fidelity.

If you use a RPi4b with AGD DI20 and AGD DAC, jcat usb xe PCIe will give you a better clock (compared to the RPi clock), however, if you are going to use an external ocxo clock, you won't gain much, if anything, from the jcat.

CM4 is a later gen of Pi which may be overclocked higher, unless you are changing kernel freq., either version can be used. To use Pi as a source, the important item is good power supply.

This is my other synology. now I am interested to know If that pcie port could function with my jcat. Its meant for the second harddrive.

HAT isn't needed. Pi4 USB out into a DDC is fine. Or a Sonore OR/UR.
