Are there any soundcards for PC w/ XLR output? I've been searching and have found none. The closest I found was the top of the line m-audio soundcard with xlr INPUTs. The reason I'm asking is I'm going for an active monitor system and most of these types of speakers will take only XLR balanced inputs. If there are no XLR output soundcards (balanced or unbalanced?) then is it feasible to go 1/4" to XLR adapter?

nope it doesn't, those larger inputs are midi inputs, i was thrown off by that too at first.

it seems i can go 1/4" to XLR without any problem.

Nevermind... forgot you didn't ask for digital. :p

EDIT: Thought ofanother...RME HDSP9632, but doesn't come with that cable as standard, the balanced output cable must be bought seperately...

Wow. First time I have been on this subject forum and there is a question already posted (sort of ) that I want the answer to. I want a sound card with coax and ideally XLR (AES/EBU) digital out, to send to an out board dac. I am thinking about building a PC based music server but I will use an out board DAC that is connected to my main loudspeaker rig.

I think the Lynx cards do. Otherwise it should be no problem to use adapters from balanced 1/4" TRS.

Yes the Juli@ does balanced, but to use the XLR you need adapters from its 1/4 TRS outputs.

This review talks about a comparison between the balanced Juli@ and the 1820.

Note this:

"In digital output tests Juli@ is equal to LynxTwo."

I take my Juli@ digital out into my Lavry DA10 with its CrystalLock. With this you don't need the XLR stuff, you have the option of either the coaxial or optical out into you external DAC. The XLR via TRS adapter is on the analog side.

If you are willing to drop some cash, MOTU makes a number of cards with XLR ins and outs. Steep price warning, however. As a practical matter TRS 1/4" and XLR are functionally equivalant. Just different hookups for balanced connections. I've used cables to go back and forth, no problems.
