They both use the SoundCore3D audio processor and can see no reason their core surround sound software would be any different,
The AE-9 comes with a better DAC chip.
The AE-9 comes with the external module, which comes with a nice XLR mic input, better headphone amplifier(?), external volume knob, cute LCD screen, gain switch, dual headphone jacks (3.5mm & 6.35mm).
Not sure if any other differences on the PCB boards.

ae9 all the way. the option to change the opamps is a game changer. Trust me i have both the ae5 and the ae9. if you dont plan to change the opamp go with the ae5 and save some money
