I've heard that it sounds very similar to the C333ES. If that is the case, you're in for a treat! Five discs and good sound... what a deal!

Keep the art di/o with it. If you don't like the DI/O, sell it.

Has anyone had any experience with this unit or has even heard it? I really need to know. I was thinking of the 333ES unit but I couldn't find one used.

The 333ES is stereo only, not multichannel. The 222ES is stereo AND multichannel. You may know this already, but it is one of the main differences in the two.
The other difference is that the 222ES has a newer DAC and supposedly a less-complicated analog output stage than the 333ES (this is true also of the XA777ES which I own--simpler analog output stage).
As to how this translates into sound, I really can't help you. I've heard the 333ES, which is quite good, but I haven't heard the 222.
I would suggest you mosy over to audioasylum and do a search. There's been quite a bit of discussion on the 222 vs. 333. Some have said that the newer DAC in the 222 makes it sound better to their ears.

I knew about the mutlichannel bit, but had assume that the 222 were inferior to the 333 simply from the model number.

If I buy the unit off of ebay, brand new, would Sony still honor their 5 years warranty? I asked the seller and he, of course, answered yes.

Sony allegedly only honors the five year unconditional warranty if it is purchased from a sony authorized center. The truth in that... who knows.
That warranty is supposed to be transferrable. You would need original receipts though I assume...

Crutchfield has it for $499 and that's about $120 more than ebay. But factor in the 5 year warranty, I think the $120 would be worth it. Anyone know of a better price?
Oade Brothers? www.oade.com. That's where most people get their Sony ES gear from nowdays. They have the lowest prices and they're an authorized dealer.
