A perfect example of what I'm looking for is:

Mess Around - Ray Charles. It's upbeat, has piano, horns. Ray's style of singing in that song is great.

I'm new to the genre, and trying to find more albums/songs that fit the style, anybody lend me a hand? Even other ray songs, he has so many, and I only know a few.

Thanks!

i don't know that i'd call "Mess Around" jazz. soul with a boogie-woogie groove? having said that, you might want to check out some uptempo swing... try the soundtrack to the Robert Altman movie Kansas City. well-recorded, good live feel, nice groove, great KC swing.

I'd never try to pigeonhole but I personally would call Ray an R & B man, rather than a jazzer.
If you're into uptemp jazz then you can't go wrong with lots of 50's and 60's Blue Note hard-bop.

Do you have any examples for me? I just purchased the KC soundtrack, I'll give my impressions shortly.

Oooh, where to start.
Horace Silver & The Jazz Messengers
(Silver again) Six Pieces Of Silver
Lee Morgan - The Sidewinder
Art Blakey - Moanin'
Hank Mobley - Dippin'
Jimmy Smith - The Sermon, Back At The Chicken Shack, Home Cooking, House Party and more.....

go to AMG and search hard-bop, you'll be there all night, or pop over to Organissimo.org, have a wander through the forums and buy their two discs!
Have fun!

Thanks Tony... I LOVE Jimmy Smith... I got his Finest Hour CD, and he's right up my alley. I think he should sing more though, hes really good in "got my mojo workin".

I also purchased Moanin' (With The Jazz Messengers) (1999) by Art Blakey... Very good as well.

I'll definately look into those other artists you mentioned.

if you like Jimmy Smith, you MUST get his live album, Root Down. excellent sound quality, fantastic grooves. much funkier than his 60s era bop output.
