Also that is quite a bit of money to spend. I only have Shure e2cs and I wanted to get a computer set up too. I have $1000 CAD. I don't use my portable source too often either. I am wondering if I can use the microdac for my computer set up too. Is it even comparable to the DEQ 2496, Presonus Firebox, Phase 24 FW or DAC-72? Those were what I am considering for my computer DAC. I don't mind cheaping out and getting a cmoy amp for now and doing a better DIY one later or even buying the micro amp later.
Has anyone campared the Monica II and the micro DAC? I haven't even bought the iRiver yet. I only have a 10 GB iPod.

Also is it possible to hook up a computer hdd to an iRiver HP-1x0? Because the one I was looking at was only 20 GB.

Also thanks for the help

for goodness sakes, get the micro dac

yes it has a USB input and optical input which means, iRiver and PC friendly.
Id say micro dac has pretty much a monopoly on the portable DAC scene. There really is nothing that comes close to it to even compete.

not pocketable, but definately portable, I went to CC and picked up a camera bag that was excellent. This was before the release of the headroom bags of course.

seriously it was like taking a full fledged home rig with me, my iRiver is loaded with WAVs(exact cd bit for bit) and acts as an all in one cd collection, minus the CDs and cdplayer.

The micro DAC also works well with different amps too. I used it as a source when I had the burned in Hornet for audition.

You should go Rockbox with lossless files. You could double the numbe of track you have available for yourself.

I have been using Rockbox since Aug. 05. Since Oct I have had very little issues with using Rockbox. It is very near being release at this time, I think.

The Micro DAC is still too large, and probably won't fit my upcoming HUB.

And the poor battery life doesn't help it.

We need more people to hassle/convince Ray or Justin to come up with an integrated portable DAC/amp. Something better than the Bithead.

Or maybe Tyll can come up with one better and smaller.

yea a smaller hi fi solution would be great.

Im surprised Ray or headamp hasn't released a dac yet.
Larocco is planning on releasing a matching DAC for the pocket reference, but I do not believe that is set to release until a long time from now.

The Larocco Pocket Reference II doesn't seem to be very portable. From pictures the Larocco seems too thick. In terms of height and width it doesn't seem too bad, but the thickness is what I would be worried about. The Ray Samuels Audio "The Hornet" is SO small. I saw a picture of it next to a credit card. It is SMALLER than the credit card!

I think this would have to be my portable amp.

As for a portable DAC, I don't think it really works with a portable rig. Maybe for transportable purposes, but that's it. The Micro DAC would serve this purpose nicely.

I just pulled the plug on an iRiver ihp120 on eBay. I've got a 60 gig ipod, which at 128kb can pretty much hold my entire collection. That's fine for the car or for my px100's. I figure I'll use the iRiver rockboxed so I can play my flac's on a portable device. The 20 gig should be cool to carry around 60 albums or so. Easier to bring on the road than a laptop, if I'm not bringing it otherwise. The optical out will be perfect with the micro stack.

RnB - we now basically have the identical setup right now, except for interconnects. I have practically the same camera bag you have. Let's talk private or kick up a thread about possible mods to a bag like that. I've got some ideas I wanna kick around. You game?

I carry the micro stack in my laptop samsonite case. and a backpack with my sennheisers, power supplies and powerconditioner. its now my portable table top rig. I stopped using batteries for the micro stack a few months back and switched over to direct wall power.

my new pocket rig is a shuffle with superfi 5 pros.

You carry the laptop around in general? Or just for music?
