Hi, when I ordered my Altec Lansing MX5021 speakers in January this year, I decided to order my first ever set of headphones. Whenever I buy something, I also do a lot of research to ensure what I buy is pretty much the best I can get for my budget. This has always been that way with the exception of the headphones...

I was in a rush, I wanted to buy a set from the same site as the speakers (so I don't have to pay two lots of postage) and there wasn't much selection. I selected the Sennheiser HD 465 which to this day I consider not bad.

I have been reading a lot of negative comments about these headphones, and I am seriously considering selling them on eBay and buying a better pair. One of the biggest problems with the headphones is external noise. Even if the volume is fairly low, they still sound loud externally. I don't want to disturb other people around me while I enjoy some music or have a movie on. Is this because the headphones are supraural?

What should I do? Replace them for a better pair? or keep them? I know it's my choice to make but I would like some comments about the matter. I play games, listen to music and movies. I class the sound quality good but what do I know? it's the only pair of headphones I have listened to...

stuff what ayone else thinks, with the greatest respect.

kikkomang is right, most open headphones will allow a lot of sound leakage, but don't expect a perfect non sound leakage (???) from closed headphones either. there are good and bad versions of each.

sound leakage does depend mostly on the volume.

have to say i had a brief spell on the HD485, and i would be disappointed owning a pair.

closed headphones, closed headphones?

i'm a solid convert to audio technica after buying the ATH-ON3 headphones. no bass in them what so ever, but in terms of clarity, they floor everything i've got under £50 including my senn PX100 & 200 and the igrado, and they cost what £22??

although they not well known look at what amazon have to offer in the way audio technica.

try this

I think they might be the worst headphones in that price range, but you should only upgrade your gear when you feel like it is time to. If you like them then great, keep them and forget about the negative comments.

yeah, and those are the HD485 which I know are a little better than what I have and you still think that.

There is no bass in the ATH-ON3? thats no good for me then.

Can anyone recommend me a set of headphones that you would say are roughly twice as good as the ones I have? My price range is £60 max and I would like to buy from scan.co.uk if possible.

EDIT: The AKG K271 Studio headphones have really good reviews and they are semi-closed which is a bonus. Where can I buy these in the UK? I can't find a place that sells them. What do you think of these guys?

There are tons, what kind are you looking for though (closed, open, semi, etc)

And I would only buy the K271 if you have or plan on getting an amp in the future.

Well I would prefer closed or semi closed, to keep the sound disturbing people but if the quality is really low with closed headphones, then I would go with open.

Why do you say only buy the K271 if you plan on getting an amp? I dont plan on getting an amp, I just want a set of headphones.

two choices.

Audio-Technica ATH-A500 Art Headphones from audiocubes are available for a disgustingly low price at around £50 delivered. they're £82.99 in the UK.

http://www.audiocubes.com/product/Au...eadphones.html

the second

Goldring DR150. these have huge acclaim as well as people suggesting they offer as good as or (in some opinions) better sound than Grado headphones. they are open though.

http://www.iheadphones.co.uk/headpho...ing+DR-150.htm

those would be at the top of my list.

don't worry about ordering from audiocubes. my orders were fine.

Interesting, I had a look at the Audio-Technica ATH-A500 and wow what great reviews. If I get this, I may even get the A700's...do you think the £20 extra price is worth it?

I would like to ask a few questions...

1) How does the Audio-Technica ATH-A500 or A700 compare with my current headphones? (Sennheiser HD465)

2) How does the Audio-Technica ATH-A500 or A700 compare with those
Goldring DR150 headphones you recommended me?

3) If I buy from Audiocubes, will I get charged custom tax?

Thanks

to be honest i don't know how they would compare with each other. all i know is that for £20 or so, in terms of clarity the audio technica on3's have blown away anything i've got under £50.

i could only imagine the A500's/ 7000's would b e more of the same, but with alot more bass.

the goldrings i'm not quite sure. i guess it's a leap of faith, but i've yet to hear anything bad about them at the price, which is very, very rare!

So what should one look for in terms of specifications when looking at headphones? Let me compare the Audio-Technica ATH-A700 to the Sennheiser HD465 in terms of frequency response...

Sennheiser HD465 = 18 - 21500 Hz
Audio-Technica ATH-A700 = 5 - 35,000 Hz

What does this mean? To me, it seems the Audio Technica has a much more in terms of sounds and range, is this correct?

captian73 are you from United Kingdom? I am concerned that if I order from Audiocubes, I will get import tax (customs charges) because I have bought goods overseas.

i'm just on my way out until about 12:00 so forgive for this being the last answer for the moment.

you do have to be careful with figures. i always look for how low the bass is

senns 18Hz

AT 5HZ

so the audio technicas would get my money.......however, sometimes manufacturers quote such figures and the permance just doesn't match. but i think in this case i think the senns and AT would be right.

the big figures 21500 and 35000 refer to the highs or loosely translated how high the treble goes. it's best to the highest figure you can really. it doesn't hurt by any means.

so in this case it looks as though the AT's have deeper bass and a better high range, ergo they might sound better. i say might, but they probably would.

i have no problems with your senns, i think they're lovely headphones, but i think the AT's would be better.

as for customs, i've yet to be stung by them, but some have.

i read somewhere, that someone brought a pair of alessandro ms-1 headphones, and was charged around £13, but like i said, i've ordered a few time from audiocubes with no excess chargers , in fact i ordered another pair of headphones today.

back at midnight

i've got so many headphones o my "to buy' list, andthe A500's and the goldrings are on that list.

Is there any reason for the A700's to be worse than the A500's?

Can I ask why you have so many headphones? Whats the best pair you have? and why would you buy the A500 over the A700?

Jun 7, 2007 at 10:37 PM Post #14 of 32
the short answer is that i see no reason why the 700's would be worse than the 500's and indeed the reviews on audiocubes show that the 700's are a good apir of headphones.

http://www.audiocubes.com/product/Au...eadphones.html

why do i have so many headphones? two main reasons, and because i've brought each pair of headphones for different reasons.

1)
i started with the sennheiser px40's many years ago.

seriously, i brought the sennheiser HD25 because i wanted a good pair of headphones at home and a pair of headphones for portable use, although back then mp3 players didn't exsist.

then i moved on to a pair of bose triports. thinking that it wasn't a good move to wear a pair of headphones with "bose" on the earcups, for fear of getting them ripped off my head buy a thief, i got the Senn PX200's, and so it goes on.

2) now i buy to review for my site, and because i love and use different headphones for different reasons.

some for comfort, Ultrasone 750's for bass, senn HD25 still for portable use, and i use them in the Art studio at uni.

Stax SR-001 MKII for sheer curiosity and just to say, i own a pair of electrostatic headphones.

i'm trying to get into the IEM market, but i'm not a great fan of IEM's, so the best i've done is the senn CX300.

why would i have the 500's over the 700's? i'm not sure i would however in the interest in what i do, i try and find the best deals i can for someone like yourself, who wants to save a few quid.

like i said before the best price i've seen the 500's in the UK is from iheadphones for £80 or so. why pay that when you can buy them from a reliable merchant like audiocubes and save a whole wad of notes?

like i said, as a deal i haven't looked at the 700's, but if you feel up to it, then give them a go!

I think either the A500 or A700 would be great improvements from the HD465. You will get noticeably tighter bass and a MUCH clearer sound. If you don't really need closed there are some better open options avaliable for that price but some AT's will pound your 465 to the ground.
