Hi all -

I have a minor problem that has become a major pain in the ears and I am hoping you wise headphone sages can make some suggestions...

I live in southern Arizona, where we get an average rainfall of 8" a year. As you can imagine, static electricity has become the bane of my existence. You can get shocked just by standing still on carpet down here! Thus we come to the problem... After doing the Beyer velour pad mod to my V6's (and even sometimes before then) I keep getting shocked on the ears! If I have the phones plugged into my home stereo system and then get up and walk aroud, I get a nice painful zap on the ears.

It is coming from the metal driver covers inside the headphones and manages to make it through the fabric I placed over the driver covers.

Does anyone know if there is a way to isolate the metal covers, or if one could cover them with something that would prevent this from happening? It doesn't happen with portable devices since they aren't grounded. It is endlessly annoying! Hmmmm... maybe I should patent it as a torture method.

I don't want to change the depth of the ear cups much more than I have to, though, because my ears stick out a bit and they get pushed in as it is.

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance.

Kind regards.

I had that problem with the metal V6 plug. It would zap me whenver I plugged it into my long extension cable and into my denon 5.1 receiver.

I think you can do a search and find other discussions. I think someone recommended spraying the carpet with scotch static-guard... never tried it myself though.

how about wearing an esd strap, like people on the manufacturing floor do. of course you'll have to figure out how to ground the strap though. maybe attach it to the body of your amp?

I share your pain thosecoldnails, on my MDR-7506s. (Identical headphone)

Whenever they are plugged into my powerbook being charged and I walk about I'll be greeted with excruciating annoying static discharge to my ears. It's actually painful at times. After the first 5 times doing it you basically lear to take the off before walking across static-producing carpet.

Luckily that only happens in Utah and I live in Californi.

I never found a cure, though I imagine using the anti-static spray on your carpeting would help. Of course, you could be a total dork and wear a grounding strap in your living room, yes. heh you'll be explaining that one yourself though to visitors.

Thanks for the suggestions guys. I'll probably give the anti-static spray a shot.
