also, what about the HD215? i read on headroom that the HD280 are better but i can get the 215 for really cheap too, can i get reed from the "shined bass" using the Equalizer?

I know the HD280PRO sound exceptionally good after 200 hrs of burn in. I haven't heard the HD215. To my surprise and puzzlement the HD280PRO sounds great on one of my old model generic unequalized portable CD players but awful on my current model SONY portable CD players. It's as though the newer SONY portable CD players just don't have enough power even with an AC adpater. Of course the HD280PRO sounds great amped and they can be equalized to taste without problems.

I have heard the HD200; only buy them if you can get them for $10. Otherwise try the cheap SONY XD100 or Philips HP250 if you require a really cheap cicumaural style.

If you don't mind an open headphone the HD555 and Goldring DR150 are in the $150 price range. You can do a search on these.

The HD-201's are in a similar price range and have the notable advantage of not being crap...

Of course do a search on the HD201. I have found wide ranging opinions on them. Some complain the bass distorts if you try to increase the volume to get more midrange presence. Others say give them 3 weeks of burn in and the bass distortion will disappear. When they first came out there was a lot of hype to the effect they were the best sounding closed cheap can. Now there are hardly any threads on them.

P.S. The SONY XD100 can take 1500mw. Theoretically they should handle louder volume than the HD201.
