I collect iPods, and recently went down the audiophile rabbit hole. Being into iPod mods of all types, and came upon knowledge of the "Wolfson DAC" for iPod 5th Gen Video, the most sought after iPod, known for it's superior sound quality. I've always loved music of all types, getting heavily into collecting rare late 70's international punk rock. In the early 2000's, I was one of the largest CD/Tape traders amassing one of the largest collections for this genre in the US.
It wasn't until 2016 when I first bought the Earin M1 EarPods (they came out way before the AirPods debuted) and I had never heard such an amazing sound, ever. These Earin buds (from Sweden I believe, started as a kickstart project) were so masterfully crafted, anything sounded like the next dimension of sound; it all became alive in a way I didn't know was possible.
Eventually they died out, and I got others like the Bragi, Sol, and AirPods, to where I eventually "forgot" that sweet sound the Earin were.
Fast forward to 2020, I was tempted to buy the Earin M2, but somehow ended up reading about the legendary Wolfson DAC, and how some people combine a headphone amplifier (I didn't even know that was a thing!) with high end headphones to get the maximum quality out of their music collection.
Im thinking if the Earin M1 sounded amazing to my audiophile-ignorant ears, then actually trying out an actual amplifier would, could, or desperately hoping would not only equal that sound, but significantly improve it.
After binging out on audiophile videos and reading posts on this site, I decided to invest $50 on a Fiio E07k from ebay, and L Style 30pin to 3.5mm jack in order to see how different my iPod sounds with a rig. I've never EVER listen through any of these fancy expensive headphone amps, and Im excited to get my rig set up; the L cable was delivered today, and my Fiio is supposed to be here on Saturday.
Can anyone give their thoughts on this combo, Fiio E07k with a iPod 5th Gen video? Did I make the right choice picking the Fiio E07k as my first amp/DAC? Any advice on how to set it up, settings, tips, anything?
