I'm in the market for a new DAC at the moment, and am looking at the Schiit Bifrost and the JDSLabs ODAC (RCA). How do these two DACs compare, and is the Bifrost worth the extra cash?

The DAC will be going through two systems, the first being DAC>Matrix M-Stage>Denon D7000, the second being DAC>Optonica SM-4000U>Bowers and Wilkins 685's.

Also, a quick question regarding running multiple systems from one DAC. If I use an RCA splitter at the back of a DAC so I can have it connected to both my IA for my speakers and my headphone amp for my headphones, would that negatively impact sound? How can I get around this?

I know a lot of people say they are about on par with each other.. With a slight preference to one or the other.

That being said, I'm a fan of the ODAC :)

As far as how to wire up stuff.. does that receiver have a line out? If so you could run ODAC>Optonica>O2/685's.

If it doesn't have a line out, I know some people use the 3.5 and RCA out.. But there is some obscure impedance rule or something you are supposed to follow when doing that. Personally, I wouldn't use both. I would just switch around the wires and keep the odac within reach. It seems you'd have the same problem with the Bifrost.

So the ODAC is fairly equivalent for less than half the price?

I do not have a line out, I have a pre out, though I doubt that would do too good for the M-Stage. The M-Stage can act as a pre, though, so I may just do that (bypass the Optonica pre and just use its power), but that would remove my ability to use the tone controls (which I use to tame treble every so often). I have Tape stuff, but I don't quite understand it, one of those may be a proper output, though I'm not sure (I'm too young for this damn amp).

Yes, that's the general consensus. Someone else might chime in and say something different

Sorry, I meant to say M-stage instead of O2 earlier. I would just run a cable from the m-stage to the odac and from the receiver to the odac, and just manually switch them out. That will cause a bit of wear and tear on the 3.5mm jack though, so if you can figure out a way to wire it all up, go for it.
