Lemme guess...you run yours flat?

I'd like to hear others settings so I can try them. I like mine scooped out with big booty, haha.

Nope. But you are using the Bass/Treble controls and the EQ both, which makes no sense. Better to customize the EQ further (like choosing your own frequencies for each of the 5 bands) and only use it, or only use the Bass/Treble.
My settings vary depending on which headphones I use, and I don't have the ones you do. The only ones I use flat are my PortaPros.

Bass at +3
Treble at +1

EQ, Crossfeed and Dithering all Off...

Stereo Seperation at 100%

Replay Gain at about 9.5db...

i use a Fuze with an E5/no bass boost and Monster MD or DBA-02 btw

I gotta be honest...I have spent the evening trying to get the sound I want out of the EQ only.

Bass-0
Treble-0

I tried setting the parametric to sound the same, but it just lacked a "richness" that I just can't quite duplicate yet. I have to use more precut b/c of distortion, but I just make up for it with post volume. I'm going to keep trying, but with the parametric set in a little "smile" and the bass and treble boosted...I get a nice deep strong bass with nice detailed mids and highs.

I'll keep working with it.

Koopa: Do you get annoyed with the E5's hissing? Do you run your volume at 0dB and control the overall volume with the E5?

My E5 only hisses at 100% volume -- I keep mine about 2-3 toggles below 100%.

The bass & treble (esp. bass) settings increase the distortion on my HF5, to my ear.  EQ increases with Bass: 0, Treble: 0 keep it clean for me.  May depend on your 'phones.

I've never touched the precut setting, I just have "prevent clipping" in the replaygain menu enabled.

the E5's hiss is very annoying when i used to use that setup for more 'critical' listening, ive recently upgraded to an S:Flo2 for that...makes the E5 sound like a cassette player in comparison as far as noise goes.

i only use the Fuze/E5 setup at work, when working out, my speaker dock or radio transmitter now. pretty much whenever i wont be listening at lower volumes.

yeah, is there some general optimal settings to have or do you just mess around on it till it sounds good?  Or are there any general guidelines/recommendation when messing around on it?

Okay so I walk around with my Clip+ Rockboxed running through a PA2V2 to my Pro 900 and I like having the five band EQ. It's nice to have.

I understand how to use it somewhat but not entirely. So I will tell you where I'm at:\

I have a precut of -7.0db.

On my equalizer the lowest section is at -3.5db, in the section the "cutoff" is at 20 (does that mean it will reach down to 20?) and the "Q" (dunno what that is) is at 0.7.

On the next level (one level up) it is set at -1.5db, the cutoff is at 150 and the "Q" is at 1.0.

On the next level (another level up) it is set at 2.0db, the cutoff is at 800 and the "Q" is at 1.0.

On the next level (another level up... the fourth level up) it is set at -1.0db, the cutoff is at 4000 and the "Q" is at 1.0.

on the highest level it is set at -1.5, the cutoff is at 12000 and the "Q" is at 0.7.

Oh, I also turned the crossfeed feature on and my "crossgain" is at -12.0db, my direct gain is at -1.5db and my "high frequency attention" is at -16.0db and my "high frequency cutoff" is at 700hz.

My "stereo width" is at 100% but is capable of reaching 250%.

Also, I have heard that it may be a good idea to adjust the blue screws in my PA2V2 to adjust the gain?

I am feeling pretty lost here. Not only do I not know what a lot of this stuff means but I don't even know if my settings are any good. Please help this noob out! I'd really appreciate it.

I want to learn how to adjust the settings and whatnot. If anyone can even point me in the right direction as to where I can learn that'd be great! :)

edit: is there anything else I should consider?

edit: what is replay gain?
