I just saw a write-up on this 10 gig hard drive player in a magazine. It seems to includes a built-in FM trasmitter so you can easily play it through your car radio -- excellent! -- and that it encodes CDs without need of a computer (digital in? line A-D? user selectable bit rates?).

Does anyone know any more details about this thing or heard how it sounds?

I think that's probably a very poor way of encoding your music instead of using LAME (if this player only accepts mp3). It's not an advantage.

It may not be as good as EAC/LAME encoding, but then again, maybe it will be. The big advantage is that it's a small as iPod and records! So, good for bootlegging with a powered mic.
