I read that you cant pass sacd to digital out due to the protection, I was wondering if there are something like a firmware hack out there that allows certain sacdp to pass digital out on sacd (not the cd layer).

There's nothing technically that prevents SACDs from being put out through a digital signal, in fact, some high-end sources do this, albeit through their own proprietary connection. For example, I just listened to an EMM Labs transport/DAC combo that could directly output a DSD signal digitally to the EMM Labs transport.

I see...but this is what I got from oppo's FAQ:
Quote:

Q: Why is there no audio output from the coaxial or optical digital audio port when I play DVD-Audio or SACD discs?
A: The copyright protection feature of the DVD-Audio and Super Audio CD (SACD) disc format prohibits unprotected digital audio output. Since the coaxial or optical digital audio output has no copy-protection ability (i.e. pure audio stream without encryption and authentication), audio from DVD-Audio or SACD cannot be output via these interfaces. To enjoy high resolution digital audio from DVD-Audio or SACD discs, please use the 5.1-channel analogue audio output. If your A/V receiver supports HDMI 1.1 (or above) digital audio, you may also use the HDMI port, which has the required copyright protection mechanism (HDCP).

I wonder if the real cause is because the DAC couldnt do 192khz....

That add-in converts DSD to PCM, but does not send the original signal. Some Pioneer SACD drives have a Firewire out, using some unspecified proprietary protocol that could conceivable be reverse-engineered.

My Esoteric P-03 sends a digital DSD signal to the D-03 DAC either via iLink or dual AES, however I don't think any other DAC can accept the P-03's digital DSD signal.

The Oppo HD970 will downconvert DSD to 88.2 PCM through its HDMI 1.1 output. Yes, digital....but not raw DSD. HDMI 1.2 has been approved to pass through DSD, but no current player has such an output.

There're no current SACD player that will output DSD through regular coax or Toslink digital outputs. A few mainstream manufacturers, such as Sony, Denon, and Pioneer, do have players that will allow digital output of DSD. Usually this is done with proprietary outputs such as Denon's DenonLink.
