Hi there, I'm interested in getting a digital audio player but I'm rather new to all this. Heard that Rockbox recently had a 4.0 release and it'd be great to use it on real hardware. I don't think I'm much of an audiophile yet, though I do notice the difference between 128 and 192 Kbps bitrates very easily. Really, I just want a very hackable audio player to help with getting away from the smartphone more.

My recommendation after trying several DAPs is to go with the Fosi Audio DS2 DAC/Amp combo for the phone, and use USBPlayer Pro to bypass the Android stack and use the full power of it. Audiosciencereview did measurements and I bought just seeing how amazing it is. With balanced 4.4mm cables on it, the thing rivals some really expensive desktop stacks I've got. I buy 16 bit 44.1khz FLAC songs on Qobuz and that's Sony Redbook, which covers the whole range of human hearing. Also that's the format your car stereo or boom box/clock radio all are set to, so no up or down sampling.
The advantage to this, is when you upgrade your phone it all goes with you to the next one. When the battery on a DAP wears out, it's usually a loss if you can't get a replacement. The DS2 has enough power on the 4.4mm balanced for most headphones, and even the 3.5mm connector is no slouch (will power any IEM).
