Ripping Lossless

here are good detailed instructions for obtaining and setting up eac.

http://users.pandora.be/satcp/eac01.htm

It includes instructions for two lossless compressed formats, shorten and monkey's audio. If you want to use flac it will be just like using either of those but the command line argument (this will be explained at the above link if it doesn't make sense now) is different, I use the following command line arguments for flac

-T "artist=%a" -T "title=%t" -T "album=%g" -T "date=%y" -T "tracknumber=%n" -T "genre=%m" %s

hope this helps

eta: eac will use freedb to lookup song info but take it from me, always double check it sometimes there are mistakes and they take longer to find/fix later.

I don't use lossless on my portable but I wouldn't fault someone who did and obviously those of us who use computer as transport/source for a home system have a reason to use lossless. Not to mention there are reasons to use lossless other than sound quality, e.g. backup purposes and the ability to transcode to multiple lossy formats/qualities/bitrates without aggregate losses in quality.
