This is a paraphrased review of the EXS X10. Who knows, it might be better than the original...

The title is a disgusting, horrid reminder that I am as much as anyone, a victim of too much media influence. That aside, I hope this review serves as a good introduction to a nice, if not perfect quasi-budget earphone, the X10 from EXS.

Some of you may know EXS - they are probably Korea's largest OEM earphone manufacturer and very near the top in terms of volume production in the world. As you can guess though, they are made in China! You don't know them, however, because their drivers and earphones are usually painted over by smaller, marketing companies which are famous for other electronics. You get the drift.

Anyway, for around 50-60$, the X10 is a good deal. It reigns in a good earpiece set: 8 of varying shapes and sizes including a large dual-flange silicon set. Are they comfortable? Yes and no, but overall, I think they do the job. EXS advertise 26db of isolation - that is a lie. But they block out a goodly amount.

And, for the price, they are well-built, if not really strong. The lower portion of the cable is thick and reminiscent of the SA6 cable, but sturdier. The top portion is just like Sony EX71's flimsy cable. It will break, the matter is how long it will take. because of the semi-pliable cable, microphonics are on the good side of bad. But, I wouldn't say great.

How's it sound, you ask? Well, that is a hard one. The Siren armature driver doesn't kick out as much bass as I am used to hearing in similar earphones which is good. And treble is very well extended - in excess of 17 000. Bass and mids are smooth and quite detailed and the stage is good as is instrument separation. Of course, it isn't perfect nor exemplary for the price (remember, the RE2 is only 39$ and the Mingo WM2 isn't too different in price).

But, there is a hinge here which may bother some people: treble can get spiky, hot, and shrill. Some may like it cause it is edgy and exciting, but it isn't the model treble which fits all musical genres. Fortunately, there isn't really anything left to naysay.

This earphone sounds good, but not great, doesn't need an amp to get the music out, has a smooth and detailed mid-low frequency, and wears well. The price is good. Despite being quite sensitive and hissing a bit, the only other problem is: tweaky, squawky treble which makes certain genres... not so fun.

Is it worth the dosh? I think so. Is it for you? It may be. Both it and the Sherwood SE-777 are nice products coming out at a similar time.
