If you do a quick search on the web you will come across many thousands of people who are having trouble getting their mobile devices and computers to recognize the true memory capacity of a Micro SD/SDHC card.

On sandisks forums site, you will see HUNDREDS of threads all about the same thing and nobody really helping out. People are buying authentic Micro SD cards for their mobile devices, like palms or mp3 players like the Sansa Fuze with an expandable Micro SD card slot, and quickly coming to the delusion that the card is either fake or something went terribly wrong. The card was supposed to be a 16GB micro sd, but after unboxing and formatting, it shows up as an 8GB, or even a 3.9GB. There are thousands of people who buy only the used SD card itself with no adapter piece, and quickly find out the memory size dipped after formatting. So there would be no way of using an adapter piece with the SD card inside of it to plug directly into your computer or a media reader, you would be forced to use only the device you purchased it for and check it via that device. ( which could read it incorrectly )

The solution to this is so vastly simple, you will be really upset that you didn't think of it. If such a thing happens to you, one of 2 things are out of place. Before doing anything, you should always format the card, but here in lay the problem. For some reasons as listed below, your 16gb card may show as a 3.9gb card.

The first is your device is set to the wrong mode. As an example, the Sansa Fuze Mp3 player reads a 4gb SD card with no problem. MANY people have issues with the 8gb and 16gb. The device will read it as 3.9gb or less than 1gb depending on which card you are using. After formatting, if this happens and your computer as well as your device reads it as less than what it is supposed to be, fiddle with your device settings and change what USB mode it is on. The sansa fuze comes with three settings, AUTO-DETECT, MTP, and MSC. You will need to first set the device to MSC if you are having this problem.

the downside to this is that you may have to create some folders by yourself and drop your music into them. MTP mode is a direct transfer with Windows Media Player, it lets you sync playlists and transfer media via Windows Media Player.

MSC mode is a mass storage mode where you can easily drag and drop media direct into your device.

If you are having a problem recognizing your SD card after formatting it. The problem with the sansa fuze is that a lot of people keep their device in MTP mode, so that it can auto sync with your pick of media libraries. When they purchase and try to use an SD card, it does not recognize properly and try to return it or toss it out thinking its a fake or something is wrong.

The second is that your SD/SDHC card is a fake. If the above doesn't help you, odds are strong it is a fake card. It is actually very common especially with purchases from Asia. You can check by authenticating the serial number printed directly onto each cards face. Call the manufacturer up if your card has a number but you still feel its a fake, speak to a rep and ask about the number. They will direct you to someone who can authenticate it for you. Cards can have a number on their face and still be fake. You can also compare pictures of the real card as found through an image search, it is fairly easy to tell the difference between a fake and a real card, there is always some obvious factor or major difference in design or color.

You can also use HP format tool or Panasonics format tool to format your cards if something goes wrong and your computer wont let you use the format feature in right click on a pc.

Hope this little guide helps. There are hundreds of threads on Sandisks/Kingston and other SD card forums sites with not a single person explaining this out for you.
