I usually scan as single album. Just select all song from the album and scan, it works every time.
Then there is scan albums by tags. If you have a lot of albums to be replaygained can use this. But before you do, you have to make sure the tags are alright, so it can see which song belong to which album.
Of course per track is also possible, but then you're missing out on (the preferred) album gain.
In use Mp3Gain and scan an album as an album but then use track gain but don't scan as tracks. That way I can use either album or track gain option in foobar. From what I can see, album gain and track gain are written to their own location in the tags so can you can have MP3 with both album gain or track gain. I like to use track gain so that levels are more consistent between albums. Sometimes though I go back and customise the levels because sometimes tracks need more or less of a boost than what the auto settings do. In MP3 gain you can customize levels in MP3s or a group of MP3s. It's very time consuming but worth it in the end. Just wish I had a hardware MP3 player that can read gain settings. Is there one made?
Select all the albums I want scanned-->Scan as albums (by tags).
Now my death metal is only as loud as my classical, but sounds that are supposed to be quiet relative to others stay quiet. Track gain is no good used on albums with any sort of dynamic. Though I scan most compilations with Track because the large variation in volume between songs from different eras can be jarring.
