Tried a 16khz file the other day with replay gain and it aliased. I removed the replay gain and it didnt alias.

What gives?

I'd prefer to keep using replay gain if possible (as I the gain on my temp amp is way too damn high)

posted here because im looking for something sciency (because I cant see why its doing it). Feel free to move it to computer audio.

Either the software or the computer can only do so much. Not only is it processing your sound file to create output, but now you're making it expand/compress the amplitude on the fly as well. I can't say with absolute certainty, but it's likely your computer either lags or it winds up skipping portions of the file to "catch up" to where it's supposed to be. Try playing with different software or use an external dac/soundcard and see if that changes anything.

Also turn off any other software processing effects if you have them on (such as equalizers, environment, crossfeed, etc). On my computer I get distortion if I have both the digital crossfeed and room effects on.

It would have to be a cosmically incompetent replaygain algorithm that would cause aliasing. All it has to do is rescale the output, not resample it.

I figure it's more likely that the replay gain algorithm is interacting poorly without whatever other processing he has turned on.

Nothing.

Then maybe it is a cosmically inept replaygain algorithm. What program are you using for playback?
