Is it possible to record Redbook audio tracks onto DVDs and play the DVD on a DVD player?

I tried searching here and the web but couldn't come up with anything, so I have the feeling the answer is no.

the answer is obviously yes, DVD handles stereo PCM upto 24/96.. you'll need a DVD authoring software..

Great!

I re-googled and found Audio DVD Creator. Looks like it does what I want. I'll have to give it a try when I get home.

Now I need to decide on a DVD transport...

That's a really great idea, can't believe I've never thought of it! It'd be the same as having a 5 disc CD player with a single disc. Now if you got a 5 disc DVD player...

Actually the DVD (DVD-Video) spec does not support 44.1 khz audio. You will have to resample to 48khz or 96khz. Most "simple" programs do a poor job of resampling, especially to 48khz. Some DVD players will support out of spec audio, but it's not guaranteed to work, and many do not. Try 44.1 on your own dvd player, if it works good for you, otherwise you will have to resample.
Some free tools do offer a high quality resample option, so you may want to look into pre-converting all your wav files to the right format in advance, if required. These compliant wav files should be accepted by most authoring programs (some don't support 96khz but thats a limitation of the authoring program, not of the DVD spec.)
