hey guys
i am a fan of RHCP (the songs/lyrics but hate the way they were mastered), and i was looking for RHCP FLAC discography, and i found one. the only problem is, should it even exist?i was only aware of 192kbps mp3s from the Various albums. The FLAC albums should probably be a fluke right? converted from 192kbps to FLAC?
anybody with any info on this, please help.

Chances are they're CD rips, so yes they are most likely legitimate.

I doubt you could hear a difference between aac, mp3, flac/lossless with the RHCP albums

Yeah probably not. Their albums sound so awful, even on vinyl. I found a vinyl rip of Stadium Arcadium, though, and it sounds very nice.

I think you guys are going over board here.
As far as I am aware the only album that has problems with the mastering is Californication. I am not saying the other albums are high quality, but they are not much worse than 99% of the stuff out there. In fact, the vinyl version of Freaky Styley is one of the last vinyls I purchased that was on the thicker old vinyl before CD's took over and the industry started pressing vinyl on rolling paper.
As regards to the ops question; the "FLAC discography" you are referring to is someones rip or collection of FLAC rips from the original CD (or perhaps vinyl) source material. All modern recorded music (as far as I am aware of) is available in uncompressed format and can be compressed into a number of formats including mp3 from 320<--->20. The stuff you find on file sharing sites tends to be in the lower "lossy" quality formats which is higher compression for the purpose of sharing over the internet.

Not necessarily. FLAC downloads are quite common these days.

@buffalowings and @salannelson, its not for direct listening, but actually for backup purposes. Once i have flac, i can, at any time convert it to any bitrate i want.FLAC to 192kbps VBR or 160kbps VBR is surely better than 192kbps to 160 because it just puts uncountable artefacts in the files. As far as Californication, guys, there has been an unmastered version (which sounds a bit good to the ears) of the album on the internet. i you feel like having one, you surely can , but i'd say, looking for the unmastered version and listening to it without clippings and distortion is totally worth it....
