What Hits!? was a greatest hits disk of pre-Blood Sugar Sex Magic material. It's all very good, but in my opinion and in that of most of their fans, the Chili Peppers reached their pinnacle with BSSM. Songs like "Suck My Kiss" and "Give It Away" were the culmination of RHCP's sound, in my opinion. They incorporate all the essentials: Flea's bumping bass, Tony's spewed rhymes, and the solid guitar and drums work we know and love. More importantly, they stick to the definition of the Chili Pepper's funky, quick, and hard genre-busting style. And unlike songs on their previous albums, those on Blood Sugar Sex Magic sound much more refined, in the sense that it finally sounds like Tony can sing and they've moved beyond being let's-run-around-naked attention-seekers to being real musicians.

It's funny that you call those songs from BSSM "poppy" and ****ty. A lot of people consider the Chili Peppers of the eighties, before their '91 uber-album, to be the Limp Bizkit of their time, not too concerned about the music but definitely shooting for style points. I agree.

I also think it's strange that you cite the songs you did as what you like and still think Californication and the new album are A-okay RHCP material. I used to own Californication and I've heard quite a few cuts from By the Way. Talk about poppy **** -- nothing on those disks has the funkadelic goodness of classic Chili Peppers. "Around the World" on Californication comes closest, but it's still a just a crappy shadow of songs past. No, everything after One Hot Minute sounds like all the other pop-trying-to-be-rock out there. Today it struck me that it reminds me of Tommy Lee's new stuff ... and I'll stop before I insult one of my favorite bands too much.

Did anybody know that the song "Hollywood" is actually a remake of a song by The Meters called "Africa"?

My favorite songs from RHCP would have to be:
Yertle The Turtle
American Ghost Dance
If You Want Me To Stay
Backwoods
Good Time Boys
Taste The Pain
Sexy Mexican Maid
The Power Of Equality
If You Have To Ask
Funky Monks
Mellowship Slinky In B Major
Sir Psycho Sexy

I think that RCHP hit their peak on the MM and BBSM with TUMPP a close second. The first two albums were good, if a bit inconsistent song quality wise, and the production was dreadful. On MM and BBSM they were hitting on all cylinders. The production was excellent, John F was a killer guitarist and they had an attitude! The last three cd's are OK, Anthony's voice has gotten better, but his abilities are definitely limited. Now they are coasting a bit and getting paid, but it still is better than most of the new stuff out there. I am curious to know what they are going to be like on tour...

Regards

gloco, early RHCP has been compared to Limp Bizkit (or, rather, the other way around) more than a few times by more than a few people. I obviously think the Chili Peppers are much better, but the similarities are definitely there.

And I'd still like to hear how you reconcile your affection for songs like "Fight Like a Brave" and "Real Men Don't Kill Coyotes" with your praise for Californication and By the Way. If you had listed your favorite Chili Peppers songs as being "Breaking the Girl," "Soul to Squeeze," "Under the Bridge," and "My Friends" I might have been able to understand. (Of course, even those songs, though not what I love RHCP for, are very good, being what they are and not trying to be a mix of harder Peppers and Nelly Furtado or something.)

kerelybonto,

Under the bridge was listed as a favorite and "breaking the girl" is a favorite of mine as well.

No offense, but i dont need to reconcile my affection for my selection of tracks i like and hate, thats just the way it is. My tastes vary quite greatly, i actually like Nelly Furtado, but at the same time i could jam to some industrial metal and so on.

It's quite simple, you prefer the more funked out material the rhcp worked on while i prefer the more "mainstream" material they have released.

Hmm, well ... okay. I guess I was just confused with your original statement: "Californication was and is one of their best efforts." If you like their new stuff, more power to you -- but in the context of the band's nearly-twenty-year history, I don't see how you can say it's one of their best albums.
