HI: If I recorded from my NAD C542 HDCD player by optical fiber cable to my minidisc deck would it record in HD when I record with a HDCD? I mean will the minidisc be 16 bits or will it get the 20 bits?

I think it depends if the optical signal is the pre decoded signal or post HDCD process signal. I'm not sure what CDs so in this regard.

I thought all MDs have 24bit ADC now.

Hey Lou,

The HDCD signal is 16 bits however running it through an HDCD decoder will yield further resolution. It doesn't really matter because your MD deck doesn't decode HDCD.

I doubt the HDCD code would be carried to minidisc since the 16/44.1 PCM data is compressed to ATRAC.

HI: Thanks guys. Oh well since I got the NAD I have not even listened to my minidisc. LOL. I have been buying a bunch of HDCDs but I think I will use my minidisc fore portable use only. Its just a shame that I have two minidisc decks. I guess I could sell the new one.

HI: How are you?The Nad sounds way better than the Sony. The Sony sounded better than my minidisc and pcdp but the NAD is a audio file source compared to it. I have been out 2 days in a row buying HDCDs and bought 8 so far. The regular CDs sound great on the NAD but I am having a ball looking fore the HDCDs. The HDCDs sound better with a lot more info and sound on them. I have been listing to music fore days now. The sound that I am getting with the NAD and new HDCD format is better than anything I have heard before. Of course the PPA and senn. 595 plus DiMarzio ICs come into play with the sound. LOL. But I never had a real good source. I have been into minidisc fore the last 2 years and many a member said that I should get a better source. The NAD C542 HDCD player cost 1000.00 just a year ago. I got it fore 389.00 new and in one day with regular shipping. Great service. I am a little thick headed and it took me 2 years to get a real good source but I never had it so good. I mean my Pink Floyd stuff is just like I never heard it before and Karen Carpenter sounds awesome with the multiple layers of voices that are mixed in the music. I feel like a little kid that just discovered girls or something. The Nad has a Hugh sound stage with lots of air- space in the sound and the bass is great as is the super clarity. I am just thrilled and now know how Christoper Columbus felt when he discover America. LOL. I am getting older and older but am having more and more fun with my music passion. I must thank this forum and members fore all the help and info that has led me to my presant rig. Headroom, and JMT who puts up with my buying insanity and XIN fore my portable rig amp. And to think that this forum that don't cost a cent and lets all this happen. Awesome.

Lou,
I'm glad that you found what has been missing in your system. About 8 months ago, I was in your boat. However, after discovering the Sony CDP-620ESII, I have understand the meaning of good source. Since then, I have been looking and upgrading my source from 620ESII, XA-20ES (OPA637 mods), C333ES, C555ES, and C222ES (SACDmods). I'm listening to the C222ES right now, and it is amazing. I now wonder how the C555ES will sounding after the modification. In the future, try out SACD for yourself and you won't believe your ears!! You won't believe the resolution in SACD format.

HI: Those sources of your sound great. In order fore me to hear SACD format Wont I have to buy a new CD player? I mean I just got this one. Is there an adpter something I can buy to add to my NAD to get SACD? And Will SACD play my new HDCDs? If I will have to buy a new CD player I think I will stay with my HDCD. Now I will have to not think of this SACD stuff before I sell my dog to get it. LOL. Oh CDs are 16 bits and HDCD is 20 bits. How many bits is SACD. Or is it just two layers of music?

Lou, your enthusiasm is refreshing. Don't ever lose it.

SACD is a competely different animal than HDCD. You cannot convert your NAD C542 to SACD format, nor will an SACD player decode HDCD. You would have to purchase a new CD player. Here is some information on the format.

Hi Lou,

Glad to see that you're enjoying your new CD player

Going back to the HDCD question, with MD and HDCD both running at 44.1khz, there is no reason why the extra resolution shouldn't be copied across... the only real difference between CD and HDCD so far as i'm aware is that HDCD is an 18bit format, but if it is still encoded at the same speed as conventional CD, then the extra 2 bits should be carried across also...

Your best bet Lou, is to answer the question for us... dub an HDCD track to MD from your NAD, and then from your older Sony unit, and then tell is if you can hear the difference between the two

HI: How are you? Please don't cut me short by 2 bits. LOL The HDCD is 20 bits. In a while I will put a optical cable from the NAD to my minidisc deck and record a HDCD. I already have the minidisc in 16 bit CD recording.

JMT
HI how are you? I think I will just stay with my HDCD format and keep enjoying the HDCD format and keep my new NAD. Now I need my money fore music. LOL.
