I just bought a used Marantz CC-3000 CD changer. When I put in a CD it'll play for 20-30 seconds and then start skipping or stop altogether. It does this on brand-new perfect CDs as well as old nasty ones. No difference. These CD's play fine on my other players.

Also, sometimes it'll play a disk at one time and not find it at all the next time. After playing the disk for a few seconds, I'll stop it to see if it's scratched, put it back in only to have the player not see the disk at all.

What gives? Is it dirty inside, or something loose? I really don't want to trash this CD player. I'm definitely willing to open it up if the repair is simple. I believe the service manual is easily available online.

Any advice will be welcome. Thanks in advance,

Ok, I've done a bit of reading about my problem and decided to start with the two easiest options: A lens cleaning and a gear lubrication. I also purchased the service manual and will be trying the self-diagnostic tests to see if they turn up any errors - I'll be sure to report back later about them.

In the meantime, could anyone recommend a good lens cleaner (a disk I assume) and a good lubricant?
Thanks in advance,

I've run the diagnostics and here is what I've found:

Without the disk:

Ran service test program 2: When "Play" is pressed I'm given a "FOC ERR" code and must restart program.

With CD:

Ran service test program 2: Service Play Mode w/CD: When Skips start I receive the following errors codes:

1006 Subcode Error - Triggered when a no valid subcode for a certain time during play.

1007 PLL Error - The Phase Lock Loop could not lock within a certain time.

When the skips finally cause the cd to fail, it stops and begins cycling through the disk slots again (empty). When I try to press <play> during this time I receive the following code:

1020 Focus Search Error - The focus point has not been found within a certain amount of time

So, do I need to replace the CD Mechanism?
