Just wondering, how 'bad' is picture quality when you watch DVD using PS2 and component cables?
I was just wondering if the component cables are enough to transfer the maximum quality of DVD movies...

And do you think a decent standalone DVD player can produce much better DVD quality compared to PS2, or they are pretty much the same?

It will look good until you see better. I think you'd see an improvement if you compared the PS2 to a current model, highly rated DVDP for $150~$200.

I've been using a Denon 5 disc DVDP for over 2 years and I'm not up to date with the current top models.

Also, it depends on which version of the PS2 you have. The slim PS2 has a better picture, but wont output 5.1 audio unlike the thicker original PS2.

I have both versions but I've never compared PQ with DVD movies...but I'll take your word.

Well, I guess I have to wait and see what will happen when I connect my PS2 to the TV.

The thing is, I really want to buy a standalone Pioneer DVD player which is pretty cheap but also plays all region and received so many great reviews. But then again I am also trying to budget some cash to get a PS3. But then again (again?) I feel that maybe it's not a good idea to keep using PS3 to watch DVDs (I watch lots of DVDs) since I don't wanna 'wear' the laser. but then again, if I buy the DVD player, that means another delay for PS3... ******* it...

My PS2 is the large, earlier version one (the one with serial numbers that is the best for modding). So must be crap eh?

No. The slimmer version is just ever so slightly better PQ that the fact it doesn't output 5.1 audio makes me prefer the fatty.
