Well I bought a "new condition" Sony D-180k off Half.com about a week ago and all seemed fine up until this morning. The problem is that all of a sudden, the player flat out refuses to fully turn on. What I mean by fully is that it turns on for perhaps 2 seconds, never starts spinning the CD, and then quickly turns back off. This is using the 9v adapter, but it does the same thing using batteries as well. I have tried using another adapter with the correct plug and voltage, but the player simply keeps on doing the same thing. Right now I have a feeling that it could very well be dead

Does anyone have any idea as to what this problem could be/ any solutions?
Thanks!

I'd hazard a guess that the laser is stuck in place, unable to move so the logic of the unit thinks that there is no CD...

try moving the head (without touching the laser lens itself) just a little bit, maybe 1/2 an inch, and then see if the same thing still happens...

Thanks for the suggestion Duncan. However, I tried it to no avail-the laser head does not seem to be stuck because the player moved it from the point where I lodged it back to the near center position. The player still exhibits the same behavior as before.

Has this unit been dropped / opened up?

The only other thing I can think of, short of terminal failure, is that the ribbon cable / cables from the lens to the main PCB could've become dislodged... in which case, same again... no laser = no CD

It to me definetly does NOT sound like a POT issue though, as to me, if the lens could see the CD, but just not focus on it, you'd get errors (on screen) rather than a total shut-down...
