ok.. so those that know better why cant one use variable output of a preamp into headphones using a phono to jack cable?

or use the phono output of a DAC with a volume pot between the DAC and the headphones?

Too quiet. Line or phono signal is incredibly low. That’s why you need an amplifier to amplify the signal.
