I had played through X and spent a few hundred hours with it. I definitely like the overall gameplay -- collecting stuff just appeals to my aspie brain.
My beef with the games is how unbalanced they are competitively. My ideal Pokemon game would allow me to assemble a team of my favorites and -- so long as the team is balanced within itself -- I could take on more or less anyone.
Sadly, there's a certain number of Pokemon that blow others out of the water. In X and Y there were a handful that were extremely powerful such that you'd have to design your team around countering them. In order to be competitive, you have to accept this metagame, and accept that you may not be able to use your favorites.
I became disillusioned and sold my 3DSXL and my copy of X to a friend. I still kind of want to play through the new games and might get another 3DSXL and Omega Ruby, but it bums me that the competitive aspect of it isn't what I want it to be.
