Does anyone understand this algorithm?

I understand what its effect is, but I do not understand how it works.

I am writing a paper for history class, and understanding this might make writing my paper a little simpler. I just cannot find any information on it other than the fact that it makes it easier for a user to hear where sounds are coming from by mimicking how the ear takes in sound.... or something like that.

Thanks

P.S If you are interest, my paper is about overcoming human disabilities with technology. I cover Prosthetics, cochlear implants, portable heart pumps, and using the tongue to take in sensory data which gets converted into sight for the blind. I would like to briefly discuss how the cetera algorithm works in making hearing aids more effective.

A little looking around gives this:

Audiology Online: Starkey Labs, Inc. Unveils New Technology

Sounds like what it does is it takes the measured response with the hearing aid and the measured response without one and converts the response with one to the response without one. I've actually messed around doing the same thing with taking one set of headphones so that they sound exactly like another pair of headphones. They most likely use convolutions with a IRF to do the actual math as that's the most efficient way to do DSP in the time domain. Very neat stuff.

One of the big brands in hearing aids Oticon has recently made the Epoq - wireless synchronized sound processing on binaural hearing aid's (for both ears) which actually for the first time allows the DSP to factors in the ITD and ILD's used to locate sound sources and process them correctly so no or little information is lost: Oticon Epoq
