how does this compare to the Pioneer Elite DV-59AVi and other universal players? I may want something that can play my current redbook collection in addition to DVD-audio and possibly SACD.

how much of a difference would these modwright mods make, and would they be a better option than getting a more expensive player?

the search is disabled and my manual searching didn't do that much good.

I have the DV-47Ai, and I do like it. Haven't heard the 59, but I can't imagine that it isn't an improved version of the 47, based on what I'm reading.

I'm going to be getting the ModWright mods later this summer, and I'll post my responses then. I've got kind of an unusual set-up, as I've got DVD-A and CD running through an MSB Gold DAC with 192K upsampling...hard to beat that. However, the SACD and DVD-A output are quite nice. They are a bit bass-shy compared to the MSB, but I could live with it the way it is if need be. It's OK as a redbook player...not bad, but not great.

Dan did my Pioneer 38a and the results were fantastic. His mods for my player were different than the ones being offered here, for instance he was still working on the tube output when he did my amp and there were some things such as the SuperClock I had installed he doesn't offer for the 47ai because of compatibility problems. I haven't compared them closely enough to be sure but the Pioneer 38a might lose a step to my Meridian 588 for CD, though with a good DVD-Audio disc I still think it surpasses it. I would think you'll wind up with a real performer though and I can vouch for Dan's work being top notch.

so if I do get this player I should definitely go for the mods....

but what about other players? should I get the 59 instead of the 47 + mods (I think they come out to be comprable in price at the end), or are there other universal players I should be looking at?

I have not heard the 59 and I haven't heard Dan's tubed mods so I can't really compare them. My money would be on the modded 47Ai blowing the 59AVi out of the water and a modded 59AVi being considerably better than the modded 47Ai. If I were you I would aask over on the ModWright Forum.

Dan is usually pretty good about answering questions like that and no one has a better idea of the before and after performance of the modded players. I remember he mentioned what I seem to remember a Toshiba player that he was very hot on, though I just looked for the post and didn't see it in a quick search. Apparently they had a DAC that was designed to their specs and the results were excellent. I would suggest you also think about whether an approach like buying a better player now together with future modifications might be something you'd be interested in.

CORRECTION - It was the Denon 5900 I think, I had links and all, but the server going down killed me sorry!

the 59AVi is modable? I didn't see it at the site but it seems like it can be from the forum posts there.

I am thinking about getting a better player from the start, but I don't know where to start looking for those. any suggestions? currently I have plenty of high end headphones, and my amp and source collection is lacking.

I can't believe it wouldn't be...check with Dan at ModWright to be sure. I'm thinking it's just new enough that it's not up there yet.

Hi!

I own the Pioneer Elite DV-59AVi. I am going to send it to ModWright LLC for these specific modifications:

Standalone Multi-Channel Mod with AD8065/8066 op-amps
Level II Mod
Power Supply Mod
LC Audio SuperClock X03 with Clock Power Supply Mod

$1100 USD plus shipping / handling.

I will get these done after my graduation which is on May 21st, 2004. I am still saving up my money and I hope that my relatives who will be attending my graduation ceremony will give me a graduation gift!
